Solar Panel Output and System Inverter Sizing Calculator

This calculator is designed to help you determine the number, wattage rating, and output required to power your on grid system.

Name: Date

Step 1:

How many kilowatt-hours (kwh) does your home/location use per month? kilowatt-hours per month
(This value is usually printed on your electric bill. If you don't have a bill, or don't know your consumption, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the 'load calculator'  The calculator below will help you determine your monthly energy usage.)

Step 2:

You need to determine the average number of sun hrs per day.

Select the State-City Closest to your location (currently only US states are provided)
Average sun-hours per day
or
Manually enter the average sun-hours for your location.

Step 3:

The total wattage of Solar Panels that you need is:
This value takes into account some losses due to system inefficiencies.

Step 4:

How many solar panels needed depends on the wattage of the solar panels installed. Select the wattage of the panel you are interested in, and see the results calculated below:
KW / watt panels =
Your inverter should be capable of handling

Appliance Current Load Calculator to Daily Watt Usage

simply list them all with their current draw. All of your appliance that use electricity say how much they take on or near the cord. These items, like Refrigerators, lights, computers, Ranges, televisions, and others, all have a rough estimate in the table below for those who need it.

For each appliance, enter the number of that appliance that you own into the quantity box, Qty.
Enter the the power utilized in watts (amps x volts), into the Watts box.
Finally enter the hours a day the appliances are running into the Hrs/Day field below.

We have also provided a list of common appliance and their power consumption at the bottom of the page. This calculator will help those of you who need it, to build a snapshot of your power consumption by day. This will then allow you to multiply by the number of days in a month (28-31) and get to KiloWatt hours used a month. This can then be entered into Step #1 above.

*Help! I'm not sure of the wattage of my appliances.

Select the appliances from this drop down menu. To the right will appear typical wattage values for the appliance you selected. However, for the most accurate information look on your appliance to find its wattage rating (or it amperage rating and then multiply that by its voltage to approximate its wattage).
